Whether you’re looking for latest polling data or tuning in to constant coverage and commentary, election news can be addictive. But a steady diet of that stress can make you hyperactive, like a kid who’s had too much sugar. So what do you do?
Take a time out. Misbehaving toddlers aren’t the only ones who can benefit from ten minutes of silence.
Just think what you can do with a few minutes of turning off your devices, sitting in a comfy corner all by yourself, and powering down. You can daydream. Meditate. Write a note to a friend. Envision your next vacation. Think of a favorite poem. Recall a happy memory. Focus on something you want to create.
You don’t need any technology. No expectations. No rules or requirements. Just you in a chair with your imagination and spiritual guidance, which will aways be your most powerful tools.
Even on the most demanding day, you can pluck ten minutes out of your schedule and set them aside for a restorative time out. If you find your mind wandering to worry or frustration, just stop for a moment. Imagine that you’re turning down the volume on anxiety and turning up the volume on peace. Then go back to your daydream.
And if you fall asleep for ten minutes and get an unplanned power nap, all the better.
You deserve those minutes of peace every day. So detach, give yourself permission to dream, and feel the calm washing over you. Time outs aren’t just for toddlers.
Oh, and take a deep breath. It’s going to be okay.
