“A World of Your Own” is my love letter to you and the community I’ve built for us to gather in.
This life journey is not always easy, especially when there’s so much fear, divisiveness and judgment around us every day. How do we find hope? Where do we find meaning? How do we “get out of the mess we’ve made?” as one of my subscribers asked. It’s a powerful question.
I’ve learned that life doesn’t have to be so ridden with conflict and struggle. There’s a world inside you where you can find a whole lot of peace, compassion, comfort, connection, creativity, and even joy.
Come with me, and we’ll find it together.
I’ve designed “A World of Your Own” to be a place of real communication. To be honest, I’ve struggled over the years with social media because short posts and sound bytes are not conversations. This is a more satisfying platform to talk to each other, to build community, and share stories.

“A World of Your Own” is particularly a place for those in the last half of their lives who might be dealing with losses and feeling world-weary. You deserve to know that you’re not too old or too tired or too lacking in anything.
It will give you ways to process your emotions through writing and share your stories in a community that’s eager to hear them. It will help with health issues and family issues and money issues and anxiety. It’ll help with grief and endings and losses.
It will give you a sense of yourself in a whole new way.
It’ll give you a fresh start.
I’ve found that I’m a better person when I’m writing, because it helps me pay closer attention to my life and find meaning in it. We can do that together. Please join me.
About me
I’m the author of four books of nonfiction and one novel, and I’ve contributed essays to a number of anthologies and other books. My first was Grace from the Garden, followed by The Only Little Prayer You Need, which has been an international bestseller for a decade now. It features a foreword by the Dalai Lama and an endorsement by the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu—two of the greatest honors of my life.
Let Your Spirit Guides Speak and Be the Light that You Are create a spiritual trilogy with The Only Little Prayer. And Twenty, my novel, came to me in a dream. Divinely inspired.
I’m also thrilled to serve as the executive director of Story Summit, an international writing school that offers live online classes and magical in-person events. We have a stellar faculty and a host of VIP guest speakers in publishing and entertainment. I LOVE mentoring writers, especially in memoir and nonfiction. Midwifing their books and seeing therm in print is one of my passions.
I’ve been a student of the spiritual program known as A Course in Miracles for close to 40 years and have led classes in it for almost 25 years. Honestly, I don’t know where I’d be without the Course. All of my books are based on it in some way. And all my life decisions come back to its central teaching: Do I choose fear or love? Life got a lot simpler when I realized that everything comes down to that one question.
My husband Bob and I live in Madison County, Iowa (you may know it for the famous covered bridges) with our two rescue cats, Bubble and Mama. Bubble, especially, reminds me that attitude is everything.
